Helping Hands for Indigenous Families

Respite and Community Engagement

Families need relief, and youth need belonging.

When caregivers are supporting complex needs, constant supervision, or ongoing crises, burnout can build quickly. At the same time, many youth become isolated from community, positive routines, and identity-affirming connection. Both realities increase risk of escalation and instability.

Indigenous Youth Services provides Respite and Community Engagement services that give caregivers meaningful relief while supporting youth through safe, structured, relationship-based engagement in the home and community. This service is designed to stabilize families, reduce crisis cycles, and strengthen connection to identity, belonging, and wellbeing.

What This Service Provides

Respite and Community Engagement is flexible support delivered by trained staff who can provide supervision, mentoring, skill-building, and structured activities. Depending on need, support may occur in the home, in the community, or through a blended approach.

Services may include:

• Scheduled respite supervision so caregivers can rest, work, attend appointments, or recover

• Positive community-based activities and healthy routine building

• Mentorship, skill-building, and pro-social engagement

• Emotional regulation support and de-escalation in real-world settings

• Support with school attendance routines, appointments, and structured planning

• Identity-strengthening connection through respectful, culturally grounded engagement

• Coaching and transition support to help youth return home calmly after community outings

• Caregiver check-ins and practical guidance when helpful

This service is not babysitting. It is stability-building support that protects dignity and strengthens long-term functioning
