For many Indigenous youth, the transition into adulthood occurs alongside experiences of displacement, disrupted connection, and systems involvement. Independence is often expected at the very moment support structures disappear, leaving young people to navigate adulthood without stable guidance, cultural grounding, or community connection.
Indigenous Youth Services created the Pathway to Independence Virtual Program to ensure that independence does not come at the cost of identity, belonging, or wellbeing.
This structured six-week virtual program provides culturally grounded, trauma-informed support for Indigenous youth preparing to move toward independent living. Rather than viewing independence as separation from support, our approach strengthens connection to culture, community, and self so independence develops from stability rather than survival.
Over six weeks, youth participate in guided virtual sessions combining mentorship, practical skill development, and culturally informed support. Each week builds progressively, allowing youth to develop confidence while applying new skills directly within their daily lives.
Program learning areas include:
• Daily living and self-management skills
• Financial literacy and responsible decision-making
• Emotional regulation and resilience development
• Goal setting and future planning
• Educational and employment readiness
• Healthy relationships and communication
• Housing readiness and system navigation
• Cultural identity exploration and reconnection
The program incorporates core independence competencies such as financial literacy, emotional regulation, positive psychology, and goal development to support long-term self-sufficiency and wellbeing.
Pathway to Independence Course
Each youth receives individualized guidance recognizing their Nation, lived experiences, strengths, and future goals.
The goal of Pathway to Independence is not simply aging out of care. It is preparing youth to thrive beyond system involvement.
By strengthening internal capacity alongside cultural connection and practical readiness, Indigenous Youth Services supports young people in building futures grounded in stability, purpose, and community.
Independence should never mean being alone.
Through Pathway to Independence, youth move forward supported, connected, and prepared for the future.
