Support Through Understanding and Respect

Introduction to Indigenous Cultural Care

Enhance your ability to provide culturally informed care and support with our 6-hour micro-certification, "Introduction to Indigenous Cultural Care." This course is designed for professionals, caregivers, educators, and community workers who serve Indigenous youth within child welfare, education, or community programs. Participants will gain foundational knowledge of Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary realities, and learn culturally grounded strategies to support youth in ways that respect identity, strengthen resilience, and foster long-term well-being.

This course provides practical tools, guidance, and frameworks that allow participants to move from awareness to meaningful, respectful action in their work with Indigenous youth and families.

Program Elements

1. Introduction to Indigenous Histories and Cultures: This section provides participants with a foundational understanding of the rich, diverse histories, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous communities. It emphasizes the importance of context when supporting Indigenous youth in child welfare and community settings. Participants will explore the historical and contemporary challenges these youth face, including intergenerational trauma, systemic inequities, and the ongoing effects of colonization on families and communities. By understanding these contexts, participants will be better equipped to engage with youth in a way that is informed, respectful, and culturally grounded.

Participants will learn to:

  • Recognize the strengths, resilience, and cultural practices that enable Indigenous youth to thrive within their communities.

  • Develop awareness of social, cultural, and historical contexts that impact youth experiences and outcomes.

  • Appreciate the unique perspectives and lived experiences of Indigenous communities to guide culturally responsive care.

2. Learn Culturally Informed Care Approaches: Explore practical strategies to provide care that is respectful, responsive, and empowering for Indigenous youth and their families. Participants will gain insight into culturally informed approaches that foster trust, strengthen relationships, and promote healing. The emphasis is on creating safe and supportive environments where youth feel understood, valued, and respected.

Participants will learn to:

  • Engage effectively with Indigenous youth and families while honoring cultural norms, traditions, and values.

  • Build supportive environments that reinforce identity, belonging, and well-being.

  • Apply approaches that enhance trust, promote healing, and encourage meaningful connections with youth and families.

3. Identify and Apply Community Resources: Supporting Indigenous youth requires more than knowledge, it requires access to community-specific tools, programs, and partnerships that enhance care and well-being. Participants will explore ways to leverage local resources and collaborate with elders, knowledge keepers, and community organizations to improve outcomes for youth in child welfare and other support systems.

Participants will learn to:

  • Discover resources designed to meet the unique needs of Indigenous youth and their families.

  • Collaborate with community members and organizations to develop culturally grounded interventions.
